DBT Therapy London & UK

I offer planned, one-to-one psychotherapy that draws on DBT skills to help you understand emotional patterns and practise safer, more workable responses. Sessions are available in London or online across the UK. This is DBT-informed individual therapy, not a comprehensive DBT programme or a crisis service.

What is DBT therapy?

DBT combines acceptance and change strategies. Its skills commonly cover mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation and interpersonal effectiveness. In this practice, selected DBT principles are used within personalised, one-to-one psychotherapy and may be integrated with CBT, psychodynamic or schema-informed work when that fits your formulation and goals.

The work begins with understanding what happens before, during and after difficult moments. We then choose skills to practise in real situations and review whether they are helping. This is different from a fixed course in which every client receives the same material in the same order.

What we can work on

Four practical areas of DBT skills work

We agree priorities from your own experiences rather than assuming that a diagnosis tells the whole story. These are common areas of work, not promised outcomes.

Notice escalation earlier

Learn to notice thoughts, physical cues and urges before a difficult moment gathers momentum. The aim is to create more choice about what happens next.

Create more choice before reacting

Get through distress more safely

Practise distress-tolerance strategies for intense moments without treating planned therapy as emergency support. If risk is acute, crisis or medical services are the right route.

Planned skills practice, not emergency support

Understand and regulate emotions

Name emotions, identify triggers and test skills that may reduce vulnerability or help you respond more deliberately. We review what works for you instead of promising a fixed result.

Name patterns, triggers and workable responses

Communicate and repair

Practise asking for what you need, setting boundaries and responding to conflict while protecting your safety, relationships and self-respect.

Ask clearly, set boundaries and repair conflict

Choose the pathway closest to what you need

ADHD & AuDHD

Adapted, structured skills for emotional regulation and day-to-day overwhelm within an ADHD-focused formulation. Evidence is promising, but suitability is individual and the work should not be presented as a universal ADHD treatment.

Bipolar

Skills for distress tolerance, relationships and early-warning planning, used alongside — not instead of — appropriate GP, psychiatric or community mental health care.

Depression

A personalised pathway that may draw on behavioural activation, CBT, psychodynamic work and selected DBT skills, depending on your needs, preferences and clinical formulation.

Why choose this approach

DBT-informed individual therapy and comprehensive DBT are not the same service

What Kind Soul Psych offers

Personalised one-to-one psychotherapy using selected DBT principles and skills. Sessions may also draw on CBT, psychodynamic or schema-informed work when clinically appropriate.

What comprehensive DBT usually includes

Comprehensive DBT ordinarily combines individual therapy, separate skills training, between-session skills coaching and a consultation team for the clinicians delivering it.

How we decide what fits

We discuss your goals, level of risk, existing care and preferred format. If a comprehensive programme or specialist service is a better fit, I will be clear about that and discuss referral options rather than presenting one-to-one work as equivalent.

How sessions work

Assess, practise and review

1
Understand
Understand and agree goals

We map the situations, emotions, thoughts, urges and relationships that are causing difficulty. We agree what is within the scope of this service and identify any medical, crisis or specialist support that also needs to be involved.

2
Practise
Practise selected skills

We choose DBT-informed strategies that fit the agreed priorities and practise applying them to real situations. Any between-session practice is agreed with you and adapted to what is realistic.

3
Review
Review and decide

At agreed review points, we look at what has changed, what remains difficult and whether to continue, adapt, finish or refer. There is no fixed promise about how many sessions change should take.

Frequently Asked Questions

The things senior clients usually want to know before they enquire.

No. Kind Soul Psych offers DBT-informed individual psychotherapy. Comprehensive DBT ordinarily includes individual therapy, separate skills training, between-session skills coaching and a consultation team for the clinicians. I do not currently provide that complete package. If it is the more appropriate route, we can discuss specialist referral options.

No. You can enquire about emotional or relationship difficulties without a formal diagnosis. The initial conversation is not a diagnostic assessment. If formal assessment, psychiatric review or another specialist service may be useful, I will explain that and signpost you.

There is no reliable fixed number. It depends on your goals, needs, risk, existing support and how the work develops. We agree review points rather than promising that change should happen within a set number of sessions.

It may be. My practice is integrative, so selected DBT skills may sit alongside CBT, psychodynamic or schema-informed work where the formulation and your preferences support that choice. I explain what we are using and why rather than presenting a mixed approach as a comprehensive DBT programme.

Yes. Sessions are available at 96 Harley Street and 335 City Road in London, and by secure video across the UK. We can discuss which format is practical and appropriate for you.

Evidence is developing. A 2025 meta-analysis pooled eight randomised controlled trials involving 850 adults and reported a moderate reduction in ADHD symptoms and improved quality of life with DBT-based interventions compared with controls. When non-pharmacological treatment is indicated for adults, NICE recommends a structured supportive psychological intervention focused on ADHD; this may include elements of, or a full course of, CBT. NICE’s adult ADHD guideline does not specifically recommend DBT. We therefore discuss fit rather than assuming DBT is right for every adult with ADHD.

Research is emerging and should not be generalised to every autistic person. A 2025 randomised trial included 63 autistic adults without intellectual disability who met the study’s threshold for high emotion dysregulation and had experienced self-harm and/or suicidal thoughts or behaviour within the previous six months. The study tested an 18-week comprehensive DBT programme, not the DBT-informed individual therapy offered on this page. For autistic adults with coexisting common mental disorders, NICE recommends adapting cognitive and behavioural interventions through a more concrete and structured approach, plain English, explicit rules and greater use of written or visual information. Suitability therefore depends on the individual and the reason for therapy.

No. DBT-informed skills may be used for selected goals, but this service is not a substitute for appropriate medical or specialist care for bipolar disorder. NICE recommends structured, manualised psychological interventions designed for bipolar disorder to prevent relapse, and says relapse-prevention work should include plans for managing relapse and staying well. Therapy at Kind Soul Psych should work alongside, not replace, any care you receive from your GP, psychiatrist or community mental health team.
